World Bank head Paul Wolfowitz hailed Wednesday South Korea's prowess in information technology, saying the achievement would be a strong catalyst for the economic development of not only East Asia but countries around the globe.

The World Bank "desperately" needs experiences of economic success from emerging markets like South Korea, which was once a recipient of World Bank assistance, in aiding African nations, Wolfowitz said at a breakfast seminar in Seoul.

On Tuesday, Wolfowitz, formerly a top hawkish defense policy advisor for U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, arrived here to discuss development and anti-poverty issues with South Korean officials.

Late Tuesday, Wolfowitz met South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and expressed his "pleasure" with Seoul's decision to expand aid to Africa, Roh's office said in a statement.
