South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. claimed the world's top spot in sales and revenue for its liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs in the third quarter, a market researcher said Friday.
Samsung accounted for 13.2 percent of all the LCD TVs sold worldwide in the July-September period, with its revenue making up 15.6 percent of the global total, DisplaySearch said.
It was the first time for Samsung to rank first in quarterly LCD TV sales and revenue.
Samsung's record performance was attributed to strong sales of its PAVV Bordeaux model, it said.
In terms of sales, Japan's Sharp Corp. came second with 12.6 percent, followed by Royal Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands with 12.2 percent.
Japan's Sony registered the second-highest revenue with a 15.2 percent share, trailed by Sharp with 11.5 percent, the market researcher said.
In the category of plasma display panel (PDP) TVs, Panasonic Corp. grabbed the top sales spot with a 32.8 percent share. South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. placed second with 15.3 percent and Samsung followed with 15.2 percent.
Panasonic recorded the largest PDP TV revenue with 33.6 percent, followed by Samsung with 15.4 percent and LG with 14.3 percent, according to DisplaySearch.
