Taiwan widened its lead over South Korea as the world's top producer of flat panel displays for televisions and computer monitors during the third quarter, according to a U.S.-based researcher Monday.

Taiwan's share of the global market for liquid crystal display (LCD) panels measuring more than 10 inches diagonally stood at 49.2 percent for the quarter, compared with South Korea's 41.4 percent, DisplaySearch said.

A quarter ago, Taiwan's market share was 48 percent, compared with South Korea's figure of 41.3 percent.

Although South Korea is home to the world's No. 1 and No. 2 LCD makers, Samsung Electronics Co. and LG.Philips LCD Co., Taiwan overtook South Korea as the world's top LCD producer in terms of shipments last year.

Taiwan has the other three of the world's top five LCD makers including AU Optronics Corp. and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp.

South Korean and Taiwanese LCD manufacturers are struggling with tighter margins as an oversupply of LCD panels cuts their profits.

Despite the inventory buildup, the LCD manufacturers are racing to build new production lines to churn out bigger panels at lower costs.
