South Korean builders won a record amount of overseas orders this year on the back of strong demand for plant construction from the Middle East, a government report showed Sunday.
Local builders earned a combined orders worth US$14.4 billion in the first 11 months of this year, up 47 percent from a year earlier, said the report by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.
The ministry expected that the amount would likely reach $16 billion for the full year.
Orders for plant construction reached $9.5 billion in the January-November period, or 66 percent of the total.
Builders obtained orders worth $8.3 billion from Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries, $3.6 billion from Asia and $1.3
billion from Africa, the report said.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. recorded the largest $2.46 billion in overseas orders, followed by GS Engineering & Construction Corp. with $1.58 billion and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. with $1.4 billion, it added.
