Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest memory chipmaker, said Monday it has developed a chip for touch-sensor-embedded display panels.
The world's first mobile display driver IC (DDI) combines the display driver and readout functions for touch-sensor built-in display panels, thus eliminating the need for an extra layer for the touch screen panel, improving brightness and providing sharper on-screen images, the company said.
"This will help accelerate the process of developing lighter and slimmer mobile products that feature a touch screen," the company said in a statement. Until now, mobile DDIs have been designed simply to drive the LCD panels mounted on mobile devices, and Samsung's intelligent DDI reduces display power consumption and improves image quality on mobile displays.
The sales of Samsung DDI chips totaled US$1.37 billion last year, taking it to an 18.1 percent share of the world market and keeping it in the top spot for the fourth consecutive year, the company said.
Samsung expects the global market for intelligent display chips will rise from $1.6 billion to $2.3 billion by 2009, due to the continuing demand for cell phones, MP3 players and portable media players.
