Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest memory chipmaker, said Wednesday it has developed a super-efficient flash memory chip that can help lead to lighter and slimmer mobile devices.

The fusion memory chip has a capacity of 512 megabits, which allows for greater storage and faster data processing and saves power consumption by up to 30 percent, Samsung said in a statement.

The OneDRAM chip has been made by combining the strong data storage capacity of the mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with the fast processing speed of static random access memory (SRAM), the company said. The new chip will likely be used in such devices as mobile handsets and other digital products, it said.

Samsung, which hopes the market for the new memory chip will reach US$2.5 billion by 2011, plans to mass-produce it starting in the second quarter of next year, it said.
