Auto recalls in South Korea dropped sharply this year due mainly to automakers' intensified competition to better serve customers, the government said Friday.

A total of 314,866 vehicles were recalled over defects this year, compared with 1.82 million units the previous year, according to the Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

The number of domestically-made vehicles among the total reached 306,586, compared with 1.79 million in 2005, while that of foreign cars fell slightly to 8,280 units from 11,589 last year.

"Automakers increased voluntary recalls due to heightened competition to lure customers and efforts to boost their brand image," the ministry said.
