South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. lost its top position in the plasma display panel (PDP) market last year to a Japanese rival, a market researcher said Wednesday.
According to DisplaySearch, LG Electronics's market share stood at 21.5 percent as of the end of December, while Matsushita far outperformed them with a 40.1 percent share.
LG Electronics had maintained its top position by a small margin over the Japanese flat panel maker until the third quarter of 2006, but the researcher said the price declines of popular 40-inch PDP products during the final three months dented the South Korean company's market share more than other manufacturers.
Samsung SDI Co., a unit of South Korea's Samsung Group, placed a close third with a 20.8 percent market share, the researcher said, not specifying how many PDPs were sold by individual manufacturers last year.
