A demonstration was held in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province on Nov. 15 urging the city’s residents to purchase cars manufactured by GM Korea. More than 3,000 people, including members of the city government and the Gunsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, gathered in the plaza outside the Gunsan Arts Center to encourage residents to buy cars manufactured by the company in an effort to prevent the local factory from being sold off. Holding a banner that reads, “Purchase GM Korea cars for the development of Gunsan,” residents marched from 1.5 km from the Gunsan Arts Center to Lotte Mart in order to publicize their message. Following the expiration of veto rights by the Korea Development Bank last month, the Gunsan plant – which is currently operating at just 20% of capacity – emerged as a likely candidate for closure.
