Three employees from a distributing company which supplies hamburger patties to McDonald’s restaurants were arrested on Nov. 30 after a number of customers, including a five-year-old girl, were sickened in the past year as a result of eating undercooked burgers. The officials aged 57, 41, and 38, were charged by prosecutors with violating the law regarding safety and hygiene control for livestock products. In particular, the men were accused of neglecting to conduct a test for patties that could detect bacteria which causes a form of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Prosecutors are now focusing their investigation on the correlation between the the tainted patties and HUS. The photo shows a young girl eating at a McDonald’s in the Mapo District of Seoul.
