The Trump administration announced on May 23 that it is considering a wave of new tariffs of up to 25 percent for imported cars. The tariffs, if realized, would make it virtually impossible for South Korean car manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai to export to the US market. According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), of the 2.53 million cars South Korea exported last year 84.5 thousand, or 33 percent, of them were exported to the US market. If the tariffs are passed, South Korean car brands would be unable to remain competitive in terms of pricing.
