The Roger S, a smartphone-type two-way radio powered by an LTE network, launched by KT Powertel on Nov. 13.

KT Powertel’s “Roger S” two-way radio the next step in wireless communication

On Nov. 13, KT Powertel, a subsidiary of KT that handles its trunked radio system (TRS) service, released the Roger S. Equipped with a five-inch display, this smartphone-type two-way radio uses the LTE network to provide wireless communication (pressing a button before speaking) and to power work-related apps.

With a dedicated walkie-talkie button on the left side of the device, Roger S makes wireless communication a snap, and the touch screen can be used while wearing gloves, increasing the app’s convenience. The wireless video service, which takes advantage of the device’s dual cameras (8 megapixels on the front and 13 megapixels on the back) enables information to be shared more effectively during emergency situations.

The battery capacity has also been increased to 4,000mAh. Along with the highest level (IP68) of waterproof and dustproof functionality, the device is durable enough to withstand impacts and endure high-temperature, high-humidity and high-pressure environments, in line with the US Defense Department’s military standards (MIL-STD 810G).

Roger S users have a separate payment plan that’s tailored to the characteristics of smartphone-type two-way radios. Two-way calls, mobile calls and text messages are provided in all the plans, which range from 30,000 to 40,000 won (US$26-35) depending on data usage. Data can be added to the original Roger payment plan, and the shipping price has been set at 550,000 won (US$484, including VAT).

“The Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters is planning to acquire more than 400 units to expand the active range of its two-way radios and to enhance its work efficiency, and companies that use applications in carrying out their work, including hotels and resorts, have also been expressing interest,” said KT Powertel.

“We will be diversifying our LTE two-way radio lineup so that customers can choose the device that is best-suited for their industry, from the slim ‘Roger Midge’ that was released on Nov. 5 to the flip phone-type ‘Roger F2’ that is scheduled to be released in December,” said KT Powertel President Kim Yun-su.
