A government effort to increase South Korea’s wild salmon population has proved successful, resulting in an increase of 1,000 fold. Throughout the past 50 years of hatchery release projects that have bred salmon populations and returned them to the wild to breed, South Korea’s salmon population has increased from an annual population of less than 100 to nearly 100,000. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has published the results of such projects in its publication, “Opening the Door to Salmon.” The increase in salmon has boosted not only the food products industry but also biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
