Samsung Electronics spent the most in R&D among all global firms in 2017, usurping the previous leader Volkswagen. According to the European Commission’s 2018 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, Samsung Electronics spent 13.44 billion euros (US$15.2 billion) on R&D projects during the 2017 financial year. The South Korean tech giant had fallen to second place from 2013 to 2015 behind Volkswagen, and even fell to fourth place in 2016. Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, ranked second in 2017, followed by Volkswagen in third, Microsoft in fourth and Huawei in fifth.
