Starting Apr. 1, major supermarkets and department stores will be fined for using disposable plastic bags. In January, an amendment was made to existing environmental law to reduce waste and conserve natural resources; the revised law will be enforced starting next month. The fine will depend on the size of the business and the number of previous violations, with the fine increasing for every repeated violation. Synthetic resin bags used for meats, fish and vegetables are exempt from the new law.
