Samsung Electronics closed out the first quarter of this year with over 20% of the global smartphone market share, taking the top spot. The gap between its Chinese competitor closed its gap to a mere 4%. According to the market research firm Strategy Analytics, the South Korean electronics giant shipped 71.8 million units for the first quarter of 2019, putting its market share at 21.7%. However, the figure reflected an 8% decrease from the same period of last year, reflective of increasing competition from Chinese companies like Huawei (17.9%), which stripped second place from Apple (13%). Huawei’s global smartphone shipments for the first quarter of 2019 increased 50% from the same quarter of 2018. Xiaomi took fourth place with an 8% market share. (provided by Samsung Electronics)
