Since its establishment in 1973, South Korean steel mill POSCO has reached a milestone in crude steel production. Despite the current global economic slowdown, POSCO announced on Oct 3 that its accumulative steel production has reached 1 billion tons. Although it required 32 years to go from 100 million to 500 million tons, the additional 500 million tons was achieved in 14 years thanks to technological advancements. POSCO’s rise throughout South Korea’s economic development also contributed to the growth of other industries such as automotive, construction, and shipbuilding. The photo shows how 1 billion tons of steel produce a length of steel that could wrap around the earth a thousand times, travel to the moon and back 54 times, produce 1 billion cars, and build 20,000 Lotte Towers (123 stories).
