Over 80% of South Korean CEOs are professional managers, as opposed to simply being members of the chairman’s family. According to industry tracker CEO Score, among the 500 South Korean conglomerates surveyed, 546 of the 660 company CEOs (82.7%) were professional managers, compared to 76.7% in 2012. Furthermore, 52.4% of them achieved their position through internal promotion rather than outside appointments. The results show that South Korean companies are increasingly shifting from a family-centered approach to a shareholder-centered approach that more resembles American corporations.
