South Gyeongsang Province, commonly known among Koreans for its Pacific cod, has initiated its release of cod birthed from artificially inseminated eggs. The South Gyeongsang Provincial Government announced on Jan. 7 its plan to release 19.5 million Pacific cod fry as well as 3.1 billion artificially inseminated eggs into the ocean. The provincial government has been artificially inseminated Pacific cod eggs since 2009 to battle overfishing.
