The Hankyoreh is pleased to announce the launch of its online English-language edition on May 15, 2006. This date marks the 18th anniversary of the debut of the Hankyoreh newspaper, an historic event in Korean media. On this day in 1988, reporters fighting against the military dictatorship of the time came together with the assistance of the citizens of South Korea to form the highly-respected Hankyoreh news group.

The Hankyoreh has always been committed to publishing information unfiltered by outside influence. We are also committed to the achievement of true democracy in South Korea. Carrying top stories selected from our flagship Korean newspaper, the Hankyoreh Online English Edition seeks to inform an increasingly international community on pertinent issues in South Korea.

As in the Korean edition, the emphasis will be on balanced and in-depth coverage of the national and political news fronts, particularly regarding relations with North Korea. Our English-language edition will give readers unprecedented access to our acclaimed editorials, often taking controversial positions on difficult situations, providing a necessary voice of dissent amid the dominance of mainstream views. Business news, arts and entertainment news, as well as political cartoons will also be available in English.

Our web site is updated daily, Sunday through Friday, each time the Hankyoreh is published in print. Our articles are carefully culled by a founding editor of the Hankyoreh from a pool of the day’s best stories, then translated and edited by an expert team.

We at the Hankyoreh want to share our well-crafted and detailed approach to journalism with a wider audience, grounded in the fundamental tenets of integrity and freedom of the press. With our English-language edition able to reach a larger pool of readers, we hope that a greater balance of comprehensive reporting will emerge in South Korean English-language journalism.
