The Gwangju democratic uprising of 1980 is known in Korean as "May 18th," when the tragedy began. Leaders of the country's three main political parties wear shirts saying, "May 31st," the date of the upcoming regional elections. They stand in the front line of mourners at the cemetery where the majority of those killed in 1980 are buried, talking the talk when it comes to "continuing the spirit of Gwangju," but with their hearts elsewhere.
