On the occasion of the 19th anniversary of the "June Struggle," GNP chair Park Geun-hye, former GNP chair and two-time presidential candidate Lee Hoi-chang, and former Korean presidents Chun Doo-hwan, Roh Tae-woo, and Kim Young-sam watch with approval as "conservative" ivy takes over.
The June Struggle of 1987 broke out in response to attempts by the Chun Doo-hwan government to resist democratic change, when, among other things, Chun announced he would not permit a direct popular vote for the next president. It is considered a landmark event in the history of Korean democracy.
