Ironsmith Heo Chang-gu makes a scythe out of recycled iron in his small workshop. Heo, 61, has manufactured scythes, hoes, and other metal implements in a traditional manner since he was 12 years old. He says that tempering the hot metal "is like adding the seasoning while cooking."
