Jang Mi-ran of South Korea has defended her title in the women's 75-plus-kilogram category by lifting 314 kilograms at the 2006 World Weightlifting Championship in the Dominican Republic, South Korean sports officials said Sunday.
The 23-year-old Korean lifted 135 kilograms in the snatch and 179 kilograms in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 314 kilograms in the competition on Saturday, said the officials at the Korea Weightlifting Federation.
Jang came up with the same record as China's Mu Shuangshung but the Korean was declared the winner, because she weighed less, the officials said, adding that Jang also beat the Chinese in the 2005 World Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Jang is the first South Korean woman to successfully defend her weightlifting world title.
Jang set a world record in her weight category by lifting 318 kilograms at a three-nation invitational competition that involved South Korea, China and Japan in the South Korean city of Wonju in May.
