A giant tower of video monitors called the, “Dadaikseon,” which is the largest piece of art at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, will no longer be able to operate. Museum officials announced on Apr. 18 that the display, created by artist Paik Nam-june, was deemed to present an unsafe fire risk after a recent inspection by the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation.
“Dadaikseon” is an 18.5 meter tall tower which consists of 1003 monitors that broadcast various scenes for roughly six hours each day. It was unveiled in honor of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The monitors and wiring were replaced in 2003 due to aging, but many of the components are no longer manufactured, and as such, it is impossible to find replacement parts. The museum has not yet decided what it plans to do with the artwork. (by Roh Hyung-suk, culture correspondent)
