A global digital forum opened here Thursday, bringing together about 60 information technology (IT) leaders and experts from around the world to seek the future course of digital technology.

During the two-day Seoul Digital Forum 2006, IT gurus and heavyweights will discuss ways of improving people's living standards through the development of advanced technologies, organizers said.

The forum, the third of its kind, was hosted by local TV station SBS and sponsored by the Ministry of Information and Communication.

In an opening speech, South Korean Prime Minister Han Myung-sook stressed the importance of spreading breakthroughs in digital technology globally.

"The future of digital (society) will not be confined to South Korea but will be shared with other countries," she said.

After the opening ceremony, the experts held the first debate on how to improve global IT industries and digital intelligence, the organizers said.

The participants will also hold discussions on global IT industries ranging from digital contents to games, semiconductors and robots, they added.

The leaders include Derek Lidow, CEO of market researcher iSuppli Corp., Siemens Chief Executive Klaus Kleinfeld, Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs and Nam Joong-soo, chief executive of KT Corp., South Korea's top fixed-line and broadband Internet operator.

On the sidelines of the forum, information and communication ministers from South Korea and 14 other countries will hold a "World IT Summit" to talk about ways to bridge the global information divide, the organizers said. Seoul, May 25 (Yonhap News)
