A South Korean national residing in East Timor was shot in the neck in the center of the country's capital Dili Thursday afternoon and was taken to a hospital, according to other Korean residents there.

The South Korean, identified as Kim Beom-ki, was to undergo an operation at a national hospital in Dili, the residents told Yonhap News by telephone, adding that Kim was not in critical condition.

East Timor has been plagued by violence since the dismissal earlier this year of nearly 600 soldiers -- a third of the tiny nation's entire army -- after they went on strike, complaining of discrimination and poor working conditions.

Firefights between the army and dismissed soldiers erupted in several areas around Dili on the third day of violence, and homes and business were torched, news reports say.
