South Korea on Thursday called for Iran to accept a U.S. proposal to hold direct talks on its nuclear programs after first suspending its uranium-enrichment program.

"We hope Iran will actively answer international calls to realize these negotiations,” South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We also hope 'comprehensive incentives,' which have been prepared by three EU countries -- Britain, France and Germany -- will be arranged as soon as possible to resolve Iran’s nuclear issue diplomatically,” it said.

On Wednesday, Washington said it would join European-based negotiations with Teheran to resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis, if Iran agrees to stop enriching uranium.

Iran rejected the offer and said it would continue its uranium program.
