Lefkowitz will tour Kaesong Industrial Complex
North Korea’s management authority for the Kaesong (Gaeseong) Industrial Park announced last week that it will let United States special envoy Jay Lefkowitz visit the area. According to a South Korean government official’s statement yesterday, it is likely the U.S. State Department will try to have Lefkowitz visit Kaesong around the middle of next month."North Korea wants Kaesong to succeed," he said. "It appears to believe U.S. understanding and cooperation are essential for that to happen." Lefkowitz has been highly critical of South Korea’s business dealings in Kaesong, saying that workers earn less than two U.S. dollars a day and that they lack basic labor rights. South Korea’s Unification Ministry refuted additional claims made by Lefkowitz in the Wall Street Journal and proposed that he visit the area.
