South Korea and Vietnam on Saturday signed accords on the improvement of the latter's atomic energy technology and the construction of a Korean industrial facility there, officials said Saturday.
In two memorandums of understanding (MOUs), South Korea said it will help Vietnam develop its own atomic energy technology, Seoul officials taking part in the annual summit of Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum said.
South Korea hopes to take part in the construction of atomic power plants in Vietnam, they said.
In a separate deal, the two countries signed an MOU on the construction of a Korean industrial complex north of Hanoi, the officials said.
"Vietnam's active attitude shows South Korea and Vietnam have begun cooperation in the industry and resource sectors," said South Korean Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister Chung Se-kyun.
On Friday, South Korea's state-run Korea National Oil Corp.
commenced commercial production at its latest gas field in southern Vietnam. The company held a ceremony in Hanoi the same day to mark the start of its gas production at the Rong Doi oil field 280 kilometers off the coast of the Vung Tau region of the Southeast Asian country.
South Korea and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1992. During the Vietnam War, South Korea sent 320,000 soldiers to fight alongside U.S. and South Vietnamese forces, and 5,000 of them lost their lives.
