During a state banquet held at the Blue House on Nov. 7, US President Donald Trump met with comfort woman survivor Lee Yong-su. Ms. Lee, who was born in Daegu in 1928 and was sent to Taiwan in 1944 to become a comfort woman for the Japanese Army, came to the banquet with filmmaker Lee Chang-dong. Ms. Lee’s story was the basis for director Lee’s new film, “I Can Speak.” In 2007, Ms. Lee testified about her experiences at the US House of Representatives, stating that, “Japan must apologize so that we can root out the brutality of sexual violence around the world.” Her testimony was a key factor in the House passage of a resolution condemning Japan’s actions in World War II.
