On Dec. 13, at a proclamation ceremony that was attended by a crowd of 500 people and took place at the United Nations Trustee Council in New York City, Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon announced the formation of the annual “Pyeongchang Forum for the Earth and its Citizens.” The Pyeongchang Forum is to be modeled after the Davos Forum in Switzerland, and is envisioned as a place where experts from the political, academic, and business sectors can come together to discuss international issues, such as environmental protection and finding a peaceful solution for the Korean Peninsula. During the speech, Governor Choi reiterated his hope for the North Korean figure skaters to participate in the games, saying that it was his sincere desire for the Olympics to create a peaceful interlude through sports and a legacy of environmental sustainability.
