President Moon Jae-in became the first South Korean president to make an official visit to the site of the colonial era Korean Provisional Government building in Chongqing on Dec. 16. Moon’s stop came on the final day of his four-day state visit to China, and took on added significance as the president stood in the same spot that famed Korean patriot and Provisional Government President Kim Ku 72 had years earlier. (Kim is standing fourth from right in the 1945 photo.) “The Republic of Korea has its roots in the Korean provisional government,” Moon said. “A nation that properly remembers its history also has a future.”
