A statue that was created to commemorate forced Korean laborers during the Japanese colonial period will be installed in front of the Japanese Consulate General in Busan on May 1. 200 members of the civic group “Busan Division for the Movement to Eradicate Deep Rooted Vices and Reform Society” held a demonstration outside of the Consulate General to announce their plans on Jan. 25. “Let’s remember our sad past exactly as it was. Japan needs to clearly acknowledge its history,” said one member of the group. This will likely create a controversy similar to when the comfort woman statue was erected in Dec. 2016, and Japan recalled its ambassador and consul general from South Korean in protest.
