The Olympic torch is covered by a veil outside of the Pyeongchang Olympic stadium on Jan. 29, ten days before the Olympics are set to begin.

The news agency had released an unauthorized of rehearsals for lighting the Olympic flame

The United Kingdom’s Reuters news agency was denied coverage of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics opening ceremony by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after reporting images of a rehearsal for the lighting of the Olympic flame without permission.

At around 12:30 am on Jan. 29, Reuters released a photograph of a flame being applied to an Olympic flame platform shaped like a traditional Korean dal hangari (moon jar). The image was deleted at 9:21 am after a protest from the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics organizing committee.

The IOC moved to deny coverage and photography passes to Reuters for the opening ceremony and stripped the reporter who took the photograph of their registration for Olympic coverage (AD card).

The IOC also instructed the Chosun Ilbo, Hankook Ilbo, TV Chosun, and other news outlets that used the Reuters photo in their reports to delete the online articles and reports by 3 pm on Jan. 29 and establish measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring again. Those that fail to comply are to face the same denial of opening ceremony coverage and photography passes as Reuters.
