The Pyeongchang Paralympics kicked off with a colorful opening ceremony on the evening of Mar. 9. Amidst the bursting of fireworks and a variety of artistic performances, including songs from famous K-pop singers, South Korean President Moon Jae-in declared the opening of the Games and International Paralympics Committee President Andrew Parsons gave a congratulatory address, with Parsons greeting the crowd in Korean and saying, “Paralympic sport not only changes lives, but changes the world.” The Paralympic cauldron was lit by Seo Soon-seok of the men’s wheelchair curling team, who had taken the flame from the captain of the silver medal-winning “Garlic Girls” curling team, Kim Eun-jung.
