Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee helped popularized taekwondo in the United States, always preaching a philosophy of “truth, beauty, and love.” He first immigrated to the US in 1957, and studied civil engineering at the University of Texas before opening his own taekwondo school in 1962 in Washington D.C. He trained hundreds of students and more than 300 US lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. He was especially famous for being the taekwondo instructor of boxing champion Muhammad Ali and martial artist Bruce Lee. His death was caused by complications with shingles, according to his son Chun Rhee.
