Acan Sylvia Obal of Uganda was awarded the first Kim Bok-dong Peace Prize, a South Korean honor given to women to work to raise awareness of wartime sexual violence. The award was named after Kim Bok-dong, a former comfort woman, and was created by the Justice Foundation to commemorate her memory and courage in speaking out against military sexual slavery. During Uganda’s civil war, Obal’s father was killed and her mother’s whereabouts are unknown after being kidnapped by rebels. Her sister was also kidnapped and murdered. Since then, Obal has founded the Golden Women Vision in Uganda organization, which seeks to raise awareness of sexual violence during wartime and support victims of wartime sexual violence around the world. Obal was visiting South Korea to attend a seminar for victims when she received the award. (Baek So-ah, staff photographer)
