The sixth known case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as “mad cow disease,” in the US has South Korean quarantine officials on hyper alert. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) announced on Aug. 30 that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has discovered traces of mad cow disease in a six-year-old cow in Florida. MAFRA elaborated by saying it has requested further information from USDA. There are currently 75 slaughterhouses throughout the US that have been certified to export beef to South Korea, none of which are in Florida. However, MAFRA officials have announced that they will amp up inspections and quarantine measures to ensure public safety. (Kim Bong-gyu, senior staff photographer)
