The general assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization, more commonly known as Interpol, has elected South Korean Kim Jong-yang, 57, as its new president. Interpol General Assembly delegates representing some 180 countries gathered in Dubai on Nov. 21 and elected Kim as their new leader. Although the frontrunner was Alexander Prokopchuk, a former Russian Interior Ministry official, critics opposed his nomination based on suspicions of the Kremlin using Interpol to target its enemies. Kim had served as Interpol's vice president for Asia since 2015 and headed the organization’s National Central Bureau in Seoul from 2011 to 2012.
