The National Human Rights Commission of North Korea (NHRCK) has declared that asylum applicants are being subjected to long-term detention in “foreigner shelters” and that the Ministry of Justice needs to present an alternative measure for dealing with asylum seekers during the time the applications are processed. The NHRCK performs annual inspections of foreigner internment facilities at immigration processing centers. Unregistered foreigners can remain in these interment facilities for months at a time; 36 of them have been held captive for over three years. (Hankyoreh archives)
