The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris caught on fire on Apr. 15. The fire destroyed the cathedral’s iconic spire and roof before firefighters managed to contain the flames. The cathedral’s two bell towers and façade survived the flames. Invaluable works of art inside the cathedral were also evacuated and thus preserved. French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to rebuild the historical cathedral that has stood in the city’s heart for more than 800 years. "Notre Dame is our history, it's our literature, it's our imagery. It's the place where we live our greatest moments, from wars to pandemics to liberations," Macron said. South Koreans drew parallels to the fire that consumed the city’s Sungnyemun (Namdaemun) gate in 2008.
