On May 20, South Korea’s Ministry of Justice awarded its Immigrant of the Year (Presidential Commendation) prize to Bishop René Marie Albert Dupont, who first arrived in Korea in 1954 from France. Dupont served as Bishop of Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, from 1969 to 1990. In 1969, he founded what is now Catholic Sangji College, and founded Sangji Girls’ Middle and High School in 1972, evidence of his efforts to develop regional communities and increase young people’s opportunities for education.
