Blue House emphasizes S. Korean president’s role as mediator has not diminished
South Korean President Moon Jae-in will attend the G20 summit set to begin in Osaka on June 28 to engage in multilateral diplomacy for denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula. He will meet with leaders from seven countries, including China, Russia, and India. On June 25, Kim Hyun-chong, second deputy chief of the Blue House National Security Office, stated, “President Moon will attend the G20 summit, and plans to speak about Korea’s efforts to achieve complete denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the government’s Korean Peninsula policies.” During the summit, Moon will exchange ideas with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who recently met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin. “In the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Moon will listen to the outcome of Xi’s visit to North Korea and seek continued and productive cooperation on Korean Peninsula issues,” a senior Blue House official said, adding, “The president also plans to exchange views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula with President Putin and discuss cooperative plans for promoting the peace process.” The official refuted the view that Moon’s role as a mediator on the Korean Peninsula has been diminished due to meetings between North Korea and Russia and North Korea and China, stating “It is simply not true that we are being excluded. We are exchanging a lot of information with neighboring countries.” He added, “Over the past 14 months, there have been five meetings and 52 phone calls with US National Security Advisor John Bolton.” By Lee Wan, staff reporter Please direct comments or questions to [english@hani.co.kr]
