Japanese far-right politician Hodaka Maruyama has caused a wave of controversy by posting a tweet stating that Japan needs to take control Dokdo via military force. Posted on Aug. 31, the tweet reads, “Is it really possible to retake Takeshima [Dokdo] through diplomacy? Isn’t war the only viable option for regaining control?” Maruyama goes on to say Japanese forces need to be deployed to Dokdo to expel South Korean forces who are “illegally occupying” the island. Maruyama was kicked out of the Nippon Ishin no Kai party earlier this year for suggesting Japan needs to go to war with Russia to retake control of the southern Kuril Islands.
