Swiss Embassy in Seoul
|
Reconstruction work of the Swiss Embassy in Seoul was completed in May this year. The former building was torn down after housing the embassy for 40 years. What’s interesting about the new version is that it follows a modern hanok motif. Inspired by traditional Korean houses, the building’s office features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the inner courtyard and garden, while its outer concrete walls form a barrier to the outside world. The Residence of the US Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, also known as the Habib House, was also built as a hanok, and was purchased by the US from the Joseon Dynasty in 1884. The French, Swiss, British, Egyptian, Canadian, and US embassies are holding open house events during the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism.
