During a special event at the UN Nations conference room to honor the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that Gandhi’s teachings and spirit have provided the framework for the Korean Peninsula peace initiative on Sept. 24. Quoting Gandhi’s famous teaching, "There is no path to peace. Peace is the path," Moon said that Gandhi has served as a teacher who has provided “courage and wisdom to the Korean people, who are walking the path toward permanent peace.” Moon added that Gandhi also criticized Japan for its cruel treatment of Koreans during its colonial occupation.
