Amid a national boycott campaign against Japanese products and travel to Japan, consumption within Japan by South Korean tourists has fallen by over 50%. According to data acquired by Democratic Party lawmaker Shim Ki-joon from the Korea Customs Service, the number of transactions in Japan over US$600 by South Koreans in August amounted to 11,249, revealing a decrease of 60% for the same period last year. Before Japan announced its export controls of semiconductor materials to South Korea in July, the number of transactions over US$600 by South Koreans in the month of June was 25,337.
