[Photo] US defense secretary to visit S. Korea next week

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is scheduled to visit South Korea next week, prompting observers to predict the US will continue its pressure campaign on Seoul to extend its GSOMIA pact with Japan. Esper’s visit comes a week before GSOMIA’s approaching termination date on Nov. 23, and GSOMIA is a critical component of the US’ strategic interests in East Asia aimed at containing Chinese influence. Esper is expected to arrive in Seoul on Nov. 14 before making his way to Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Esper will be attending the Security Consultative Meeting (SCM) on NOv. 15.
