S. Korean cardinal pledges organ donation |
South Korean Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk on Friday made a commitment to donate his organs after his death, urging others to follow suit and help save lives.
"Posthumous organ donation gives life and is the greatest expression of love," Cheong, 76, said in a prayer meeting of about 200 priests in Myeongdong Cathedral Church.
"Everybody becomes happy to think they gave or they received something very valuable."
Most of the 500 priests of the Roman Catholic Church who gathered for the Feast of the Sacred Heart in Myeongdong and other Catholic churches in Seoul also pledged to make posthumous organ donations, said organizers of the Archdiocese of Seoul.
Cheong, elevated to his post by Pope Benedict XVI in February, is the second cardinal in South Korea following Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan who was appointed by Pope Paul VI in 1969. Seoul, June 23 (Yonhap News)
